FAQ
1. Are they real?
The natural sandstone walls of the underground rooms, passages and shops within the hotel provide the guests with the experience of desert-style living. The surface of these walls, revealed by tunnelling with mining machinery is simply sealed with a clear sealant to reduce dust. This sealant must be recoated periodically. 2. Are the underground rooms airconditioned? No matter how harsh the climate of Coober Pedy becomes, our underground rooms maintain a comfortable, even temperature which ranges from 23 to 25 degrees Celsius day and night throughout the year. Airconditioning is not required. 3. Is the water safe to drink?Yes, it is clean and safe. Coober Pedy's water supply comes from a bore 26km out on the Oodnadatta Road. It is filtered and treated in town. Water is very precious. In the desert of the driest Continent on earth, our drinking water is considered more precious than opal. Please don't waste water. 4. Where is breakfast?Breakfast is served between 7.00 am and 10.00 am in the Crystal Cafe, located underground to the right of the main building. A light Buffet or an A La Carte selection is available. All guests are welcome. The Crystal Cafe is also open for refreshments throughout the day. A delicious lunch menu is offered from 12.00 noon to 3.00 pm. 5. What is opal?Opal is a form of silica, containing water within the mineral structure. Colour in precious opal is caused by the regular array of silica spheres diffracting white light and breaking it into colours of the spectrum. Please visit Opal World and view our large display of precious opal. Our staff will be happy to share their knowledge with you. 6. How far to Travel?
For eight months of the year temperatures rise and range from 35 to 47 degrees Celsius with occasional searing dust storms. The winter months are typical of the desert with warm sunny days and freezing cold nights. 8. How do you get to Coober Pedy?Coober Pedy is located along the sealed Stuart Highway. You can get there by conventional vehicle. |
